TILE TRENDS
Bigger is Better
The fastest growing sizes for floor and wall tiles are 24″x 48″ and 24″ x 24″. Large tiles give a space a more spacious and upscale feeling. They also reduce the amount of grout which makes maintenance easier. Large format tiles do however, require very precise installation.
Mosaics
Tile mosaics are the ‘bling’ in flooring projects. They make spaces feel unique and special. Often they are the most beloved element in a new home or renovation project.
White and Grey
Since tile lasts so long and is expensive to replace frequently, neutral colours are often sought-after. White and grey tones are dominant right now and are anticipated to stay that way through 2020. They are easy colours to match and go great with most wood stains and other finishes.
In-floor Heating
Have you ever walked on a heated tile floor? It is amazing. Once you experience the luxury of heated tiles you will never do tile without heating again. A typical bathroom in-floor heating setup can run around $300-$600 so it is very affordable.
Common Tile Misconceptions
The colour and pattern goes all the way through a porcelain tile.
While this is true for full-body porcelain tiles it is not for glazed porcelain. It just so happens that most porcelain tiles are glazed. The good news is that chipping is a very low occurrence with tile these days. Good-quality porcelain tiles seldom chip. It is not certain that Mike Holmes started this myth but he certainly gave most Holmes on Holmes viewers that impression.
Shower Waterproofing
There are a least a dozen shower waterproofing systems or methodologies these days and some are much better than others. Liquid waterproofing systems, in our opinion, do not have a good track record. There are countless documented failures of these systems and nobody ever seems to follow the near-impossible instructions. We know through experience and industry knowledge that membranes work best. We have extensive experience with Schluter Kerdi, Prova Mat and Trugard Vapour Shield. We prefer Trugard Vapour Shield because they represent the best value and have great quality and benefits.
